Why Banana Split Shop Uses "Sapphic"—And Why It Matters

You’ve probably noticed the word “sapphic” popping up more and more. Maybe you’ve wondered, “Do we really need another label?” or assumed it’s just a passing trend. But we believe sapphic is a necessary and unifying identity that helps define and celebrate a community often overlooked in both language and representation.

At Banana Split Shop, we’re not just creating toys—we’re creating a community.

Our mission is to foster a supportive space for open discourse about queer intimacy and pleasure. A space that recognizes and celebrates the full spectrum of attraction and identity, beyond restrictive labels. We use the term sapphic intentionally because the language we choose shapes who feels included, who we serve, and who feels seen in our community.

But what does it actually mean to be sapphic, and why is this identity so important to us at Banana Split Shop?

What Does "Sapphic" Mean?

The term traces back to Sappho, the Greek poet from Lesbos, whose works expressed deep love and longing between women. While “lesbian” also stems from her legacy, sapphic has evolved into something broader.

Unlike WLW (women-loving-women), sapphic refers to all queer women, regardless of sexuality, and is gender-expansive. It welcomes nonbinary people who have experiences of attraction that align with sapphic love, without forcing anyone into a binary category.

Why “Sapphic” Matters to Banana Split Shop

We are not just making toys for lesbians. We are making toys for sapphics—for all people who exist within this unique space of queer attraction, connection, and pleasure.

Labels like “lesbian” don’t include everyone we serve. Many nonbinary, bisexual, pansexual, and trans people don’t feel fully included in the “lesbian” or "WLW" label, but still want and deserve toys designed for their pleasure and partnerships. Using an inclusive term ensures that everyone in our community knows our toys were made with their needs and desires in mind.

Why We Need a Term to Bring Us Together

Words have power. The words we use shape our communities, our visibility, and our inclusion.

Historically, sapphic people have had to carve out their own spaces—whether in literature, pop culture, or even within LGBTQ+ circles. Yet, the language of attraction has often been limiting, leaving nonbinary, bisexual, pansexual, and trans sapphics without a clear identity or a community to call their own. Too often, they are left feeling like outsiders in queer or lesbian spaces, questioning whether they truly belong.

Sexuality is fluid. Identities shift, evolve, and grow—yet there’s often fear that questioning or exploring labels could mean losing connection to a community. And we believe that no one should feel alienated from their own queerness just because their identity ebbs and flows.

This is why sapphic matters. It offers flexibility, inclusivity, and space for self-exploration. Just like Banana Split Shop's designs, the term acknowledges that queer love isn’t one-size-fits-all. After all, don’t we already deal with enough imposter syndrome in our lives? No one should have to wonder if they’re “queer enough” to belong.

"Sapphic” is valuable because it provides a way to connect across our vast spectrum of identities and sexualities. For many, it offers a sense of belonging that affirms their queerness, no matter how they define it.

Banana Split Shop: Sex Toys Designed for Sapphics

So why does Banana Split Shop exist? To serve and celebrate our community. Because we deserve:

  • Better sex toys — designed for our partnerships, not repurposed for them.
  • More inclusivity—because our pleasure is not one-size-fits-all.
  • Community—where all feel welcome, whether they’re lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, trans, nonbinary, or beyond.

We use the term sapphic because we refuse to leave anyone behind. If you have ever struggled to find toys that work for your pleasure, your relationships, or your body, then welcome—you belong here.
